- Introduction
-
- Each _L_i_n_u_x machine must have a name and is generally part of a domain
- (A set of machine under some common administration). Furthermore, each
- computer with a network adaptor belongs to an IP network. This is the
- screen that set most of the information needed so your machine will be
- able to communicate over the network.
-
- 11.. HHiinntt
-
- If you have no Ethernet adaptor and no connection to the Internet you
- can mostly disregard this screen and just invent a name for your
- machine.
-
- If you ...
-
- ╖ do have an Ethernet adaptor,
-
- ╖ intend to do some networking with Linux with other Unix/Linux
- machine on your LAN,
-
- ╖ know nothing about TCP/IP networking,
-
- ╖ and nobody around knows anything about TCP/IP networking,
-
- then select the option "Install Isolated/simple network from scratch"
- under the menu item "Networking". You can disregard this screen.
-

-
- You are prompt for the following information:
-
- 22..11.. PPrriimmaarryy nnaammee ++ ddoommaaiinn
-
- This is the name of the machine. The machine may have several, but
- there is one which is more important (more official). The name may be
- composed of letters and numbers. The case is not important. It also
- contain the domain name.
-
- The machine is part of a set of machine under a common administration.
- This domain name is generally used for email. If you don't know what
- to write there then use the domain name of your Internet provider.
- Put only a single word (name without domain) if you have no idea.
-
- ex: pcjack.mydomain.com
-
- 22..22.. AAlliiaasseess
-
- The machine may have nickname for different purpose. You can specify
- several on the line, separated by spaces.
-
- 22..33.. IIPP aaddddrreessss
-
- If you machine is on a network (Ethernet probably), you must enter its
- IP number. If there is no IP network currently installed on your LAN,
- you can leave this empty.
-
- 22..33..11.. YYoouu hhaavvee nnoo EEtthheerrnneett aaddaappttoorr
-
- You can set the IP address of the first Ethernet adaptor to 127.0.0.1.
- _L_i_n_u_x_c_o_n_f will prompt you about this anyway if you left this field
- blank.
-
- Choosing this number will allows you to operate normally with full
- networking even if you don't have any Ethernet adaptor. You may want
- to do this for the following reasons.
-
- ╖ You want to practice networking. _L_i_n_u_x has a very general and
- powerful networking allowing it to be its own server (You can
- telnet to your own machine, mount your own disk as if they were NFS
- volume and so on).
-
- ╖ You have no "permanent" network adaptor but you do PPPPPP or SSLLIIPP
- networking.

-
- If you are setting up a new isolated LAN (Not connected to the
- _I_n_t_e_r_n_e_t, the IP network 192.168.1.0 is a good choice. This is a
- network number specifically allocated for private network. If your
- network gets hook to the _I_n_t_e_r_n_e_t later (through a firewall for
- example), your network number won't class with an existing network, so
- the gateway won't be confused.
-
- Pick an IP number for your machine between 192.168.1.1 and
- 192.168.1.254. The Network address will be 192.168.1.0
-
- 22..44.. NNeettwwoorrkk aaddddrreessss
-
- Your IP number may be parsed into two components: The network part and
- the station ID. For example, a station having the IP number
- 192.168.1.10 belong to the network 192.168.1.0 and do have the ID 10.
- It is common practice to express a network address using four numbers,
- where the one corresponding to the station ID are 0.
-
- This field is optional (like the netmask) below. Unless there is sub-
- netting on your LAN.
-
- 22..55.. NNeettmmaasskk
-
- Unless you are doing some sub-netting, you can leave this field empty.
- Your administrator will provide a magic sequence like 255.255.255.192
- if there is sub-netting on you LAN.

-
- A _L_i_n_u_x PC can have up to 4 Ethernet adaptors (In fact it can have
- more but this is the limit configured in the kernel).
-
- Each Ethernet adaptor must have an IP number. You may supply a name
- for each adaptor, but this is optional.
